Up until the last couple of decades being successful in business and in life was mainly put down to having a high IQ or intelligence level. Indeed, this was generally accepted as the reason as to why most people were successful however in recent years there has been a trend that has tried to get away from this and, instead, look to other reasons and one of these is emotional intelligence. What is this we hear you say? Certainly EI has not been as widely publicized as IQ is however it does play an important role in 21st century business.

Getting a TalentSmart Emotional Intelligence (EQ) could be vital for your career and personal life as it can demonstrate just how much emotional intelligence you have. Essentially EI is the ability to perceive and then influence other people’s emotions while keeping a check on your own. Look at the example of a stressful instance at work; some people would get carried away in the emotion of it all and not be able to think clearly however those with a high level of emotional intelligence can put a check on their own emotions and still think logically and rationally and make correct decisions; indeed they can also analyze other people’s emotions and act accordingly. So you can see why having a high level of EQ can be more advantageous than IQ.

In fact, the great thing about emotional intelligence is that it can be learnt. Your IQ is generally static however emotional intelligence can be developed over time with training; not everyone can accomplish a high level however most people can gain a basic understanding of it and use it in the workplace. While it is not as well known as IQ, EI is coming to prominence and many global businesses are beginning to recognize its advantageous effects.
